We sat down with Pharmacy Operations Manager, Stephen Luna, and asked him about what it’s like to work at Omnicell, and leadership lessons he has learned along the way.

What leadership skills have been most valuable in your role as pharmacy operations manager?

“The leadership skill that has helped the most within this role is learning how to manage people. I manage about six different pharmacies now and I’ve learned that there are different types of personalities to work with— there are also different situations that are unique, with a lot of pharmacies being in rural communities. Adjusting to the ways in which people interpret a pharmacy and how it is received goes a long way on the management side of things.”

What is something about your job most people wouldn’t expect but is essential to success?

“The willingness to roll your sleeves up and jump into the pharmacy is essential in this realm. There have been quite a few times, including recently, where I have had to go back to helping with pharmacy technician type tasks— help with typing, assist with deliveries, and a few other things. On top of anything that goes on administratively, we still must be available to help any way we can with day-to-day things in this role.”

How does Omnicell help you maintain a healthy work-life balance?

“Omnicell has been great with this. The company goes beyond in several initiatives, one of which being the $500 to help with our health benefits— it’s beneficial for each of us. It shows that Omnicell is interested and invested in their employees having a good, healthy life outside of work. Allocating time to further your education outside of what the company is doing is also something this organization supports— they have been hyper focused on work-life balance for all employees and place high emphasis on work-life balance.”

How has Omnicell helped you grow as a leader and develop your career?

“Omnicell has given me an opportunity to step into a leadership role and take on different aspects within it. They have also allowed me to focus on the broader business side of pharmacy— I can interact with clients and vendors more— and see where we can fit into the larger picture. It’s been a huge steppingstone in my career here and shows I don’t have to be stagnant or forced into staying in a dead-end role.”
